Eccleston Delph January 2012

Eccleston Delph January 2012

It’s been some time since I last went to Eccleston Delph so it was quite a surprise to see some of the latest improvements over the last year. I joined up with our “Friday Divers” who dive the Delph every Friday on a fortnightly basis depending on the weather. The depending on the weather bit is probably a reflection of the average age of the “Friday Divers” and that includes me.

There looks to be a new sign at the entrance which is quite impressive and started me to look for other changes. The thing that struck me most is the amount of access points which make for easy access at busy times. It is also possible to walk around the site following the side of the quarry, which is great for me taking photos. This makes it a big plus when you look what the access is like at Capenwray. Little things like a container to get out of the weather when changing make for a very diver friendly site. The owners have really taken onboard the comments of divers using the site over the years since it opened.

Our “Friday Divers” consisted of Mike Fletcher, Paul Carter, Jim Carter-Lindsay and a friend of Pauls. They all seemed pretty keen to get in the water after the Christmas and New Year break. With a water temperature of about 7ºC it looked pretty inviting, even got me thinking about getting back in the water again? You can see from some of the pictures that the water clarity was very good with visibility in excess of 7 meters.

The plan as far as I could see was to cover as much as the quarry as possible in about half an hour which both teams of divers seemed able to do with ease. This would probably not be possible at Capenwray which we all concluded is quite a bit larger in area. I think the Delph has quite a bit going for it as it is quite a picturesque location with all the surrounding trees.

The consensus seems to be that the dive was excellent with better than average visibility with plenty to see underwater. I noted that the Trout population seems to have grown considerably since I       was last year and they are getting bigger with all the food they are been fed by divers and children. I was surprised to find that three Sturgeons had been put in; considering they are an endangered species in the UK I hope they survive and start to breed? We might even get to a point were the owners are selling Delph Caviar at some point in the future, nice thought. I really enjoyed my day out especially as the weather was quite kind to us and look forward to going again.

Anyway this last picture I hope will give you some idea of the visibility on the day which from the side looked excellent. We finished with a brew and bacon butties in the café which finished off a great day out. Thanks for the invite from the “Friday Divers” I will be back again in the near future.
